A high-fiber roughage source for cattle, sheep, and goats

Cotton Seed Hulls are a natural, feed-grade fiber source commonly used in ruminant diets to support healthy rumen function and digestion. This coarse, palatable roughage helps promote cud chewing and proper gut activity, making it an excellent addition to total mixed rations or forage-based feeding programs. Cotton Seed Hulls are best fed as a supplemental fiber alongside adequate protein, energy, and high-quality forage.

Cottonseed hulls are the fibrous, outer seed coverings left over after cottonseed oil extraction. Highly palatable and boasting high "effective" fiber, they are primarily used as supplemental roughage in ruminant diets (cattle, sheep, goats) and as an ideal substrate for growing culinary mushrooms.
1. Livestock Nutrition & Feeding
Though low in crude protein (around 4-5%) and energy, cottonseed hulls are celebrated for their palatability and digestive benefits.
  • Rumen Health: Their coarse, bulky nature encourages cud-chewing and prevents digestive upsets in animals fed heavy, grain-dense diets.
  • Feed Binder: In textured feeds, hulls act as an excellent binder, holding together powdery vitamins, minerals, and meal packages.
  • Guidelines: They should never exceed 50% of an animal's total diet, as they are not dense in nutrients.
2. Mushroom Cultivation
Cottonseed hulls are a highly favored bulk substrate for growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms (such as Oyster, Shiitake, and Lion’s Mane).
  • Nutrient Profile: They contain the exact carbon-to-nitrogen ratios and lignin levels that mycelium easily thrives on.
  • Yield: Many growers use a mix of cottonseed hulls and soy hulls to create a dense, highly productive growing medium.
