Buck Forage Oats are the world’s greatest, most winter tolerant oats ever developed. This is food plot seed of the highest quality, and is hand-picked by Dr. James C. Kroll from his private forage preference trials for white-tailed deer.

Seeding Date: Late Summer/ Early Fall

Seeding Depth: ½” to 1½”

Rate per Acre: Broadcast seed or drill 100-120 pounds per acre. No till drilling is highly recommended.

–  Disc or till ground to produce a soft seed bed.

–  If broadcast, re-disc the plot with the disc blades 4 inches deep for best results. If drilled, consult drill maker setting and set seed 2 inches deep in the soil.

–  Fertilize and lime according to soil test recommendations prior to planting. With no soil test, apply 150 pounds of 19-19-19 fertilizer as a pre-plant application or top dress after planting.

Buck Forage Oats are a patented, specialized variety bred explicitly for wildlife food plots, whereas regular (grain or feed) oats are farmed to produce commercial grain yields. Buck Forage Oats stay low, leafy, and tender longer, resist cold temperatures much better, and keep high protein levels deep into the winter.

Growth Habit: Regular grain oats grow tall quickly and bolt to seed heads fast. Buck Forage Oats focus energy on thick, leafy green growth and stay short longer so deer can graze easily.
Cold Hardiness: Regular oats die off quickly after a hard freeze or frost. Buck Forage Oats tolerate much lower temperatures and stay green even after heavy frosts. 
Nutrition:
 Buck Forage Oats maintain a higher protein content as the plant matures. Regular feed oats lose nutritional value and become tough and unpalatable much faster.
Purpose & Cost: Regular oats (like common bin-run or feed store oats) cost less and are meant for grain harvest or livestock. Buck Forage Oats are a specialized, cleaner seed optimized strictly to attract and feed deer. 
Note on preference: On forums like Deer Hunter Forum, opinions are mixed regarding whether deer inherently prefer Buck Forage Oats over standard generic oats when both are young and well-fertilized, though hunters generally agree on the superior cold-tolerance of the branded variety. 

Planting per acre:
For a pure stand food plot, you should plant 100 to 120 pounds of Buck Forage Oats per acre. Since Buck Forage Oats are typically sold in 50-pound bags, you will need 2 to 2.5 bags per acre.
